Pi-CNG & EV, Lagos Deploy 35 Additional CNG, Electric Buses
The Presidential Initiative on Compressed Natural Gas and Electric Vehicles (Pi-CNG & EV), in collaboration with the Lagos State Government, has deployed 35 additional CNG and electric buses to operators under the Lagos Metropolitan Area Transport Authority (LAMATA), as part of efforts to expand affordable public transportation in the state.
The buses were handed over on Wednesday, September 30, 2026, in Lagos.
Speaking at the ceremony, the Chief Operating Officer of Pi-CNG & EV, Mr. Tosin Coker, who represented the Executive Chairman, Barr. Ismaeel Ahmed, OON, said the deployment comprised 15 CNG buses and 20 electric buses, which will augment the existing LAMATA fleet.
According to Coker, the intervention goes beyond the deployment of buses and is intended to improve mobility while reducing the cost of public transportation.
"We have added 15 CNG buses and 20 electric buses to augment the LAMATA fleet. The focus is on moving more people efficiently while taking advantage of alternative energy to reduce the cost of transportation."
— Tosin Coker, Chief Operating Officer, Pi-CNG & EV
He noted that deploying CNG and electric buses would help operators reduce operating costs while providing commuters with a more efficient and sustainable means of transportation.
Also speaking at the ceremony, the Lagos State Commissioner for Transportation described the buses as an important addition to the state's public transport system and an opportunity to improve the daily commuting experience of Lagos residents.
He said the deployment would support the state's efforts to build a cleaner, smarter and more sustainable transportation system.
The Commissioner also expressed appreciation to President Bola Ahmed Tinubu for supporting initiatives aimed at improving public transportation and accelerating the adoption of cleaner energy alternatives.
The deployment follows the Presidential directive to ensure a reduction in transport fares, particularly through the deployment of CNG and electric vehicles for commercial transportation. The additional buses are expected to support lower operating costs for operators and translate those savings into more affordable fares for Lagos commuters.
