FG, States Advance Commitment on Transport Fare Reduction Using CNG, EV

The Federal Government will convene representatives of State Governments in Abuja as part of efforts to advance the implementation of the National Affordable CNG Transit Programme (NACTP) and drive down transportation costs across the country.

The one-day stakeholder engagement, convened by the Presidential Initiative on Compressed Natural Gas and Electric Vehicles (Pi-CNG & EV), follows the directive of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, GCFR, on measures to reduce transportation costs for Nigerians by October 1.

The meeting will bring together officials responsible for transport, energy, environment, and other relevant sectors from across the states to discuss practical steps for implementing the programme at the state level.

Discussions will focus on aligning Federal and State priorities, identifying state-specific transportation requirements, and developing implementation frameworks for the deployment of CNG-powered public transportation and supporting infrastructure.

"The savings that come from the adoption of CNG must ultimately reach the Nigerian commuter. This requires the Federal Government, State Governments, transport operators, and other stakeholders to work together on practical implementation models that reflect the realities of each state."

— Barr. Ismaeel Ahmed, OON, Executive Chairman, Pi-CNG & EV

The National Affordable CNG Transit Programme is expected to deepen Federal-State collaboration around CNG-powered public transportation, while creating a framework through which lower operating costs can translate into more affordable fares for Nigerians.

The stakeholder engagement will be held at Abuja Intercontinental Hotel, Abuja, on Thursday, September 10, 2026.
